a perfect skirt
i have a serious lack of skirts in my wardrobe. part of the problem is i don't really know how to style them - i just don't. i always struggle with what to wear on top. but a friend of mine recently showed up to an outing wearing the cutest tulip skirt, and it got me thinking about the versatility of skirts..

the skirt she was wearing is the silence and noise hi-waisted tulip skirt from urban outfitters and i love it. pictured here in blue (it's easier to see in blue, but i would buy it in black), i can picture pairing it with a tight tank, cardigan, and tights for the upcoming fall season.

in terms of shoes - this dress can be paired with practically anything ! pumps, flats, boots, ankle boots - the possibilities are endless. something i never imagined with skirts - but i am maybe becoming a bit of a convert.. only time can tell.
thanks urban outfitters for the pictures !
coming SOON - my take on mens work clothes..

has american apparel gone too far ?
has american apparel gone too far ? i would say so. i mean, i know the 80's are "in" right now, but has good taste gone out ? just the name of these pants alone makes me cringe: bleachy four-way stretch high-waist side zipper pant.

four way stretch ? bleachy ? add a high waist? ick. not a way i want to describe my pants EVER.
the more i look at these pants, the more they remind me of the SNL skit "mom jeans." i really do not think these pants will do your behind any justice - unless you like an enormously elongated butt.
when you try to incorporate 3 different "trendy" elements into one piece, i feel like it most often leads to disaster. i value that aa sometimes has an edgier sort of style, and they are more bold than say, jcrew, but i think these pants are a total miss. and for 78 dollars, they are no bargain ! i would rather invest in a piece that will survive multiple seasons, not just a halloween party.
sorry for the harshness of the post, but really ? it needs to be said..

the boyfriend blazer
the boyfriend blazer seems to be cropping up all over the place this season, and it is a piece i am eager to get my hands on. i think it is such a classic look - it can either be dressed up or dressed down, but always gives a clean and put together look.

above is the long boyfriend blazer from jcrew.com. if i could pick one blazer, i would probably get this one ! but at 215 dollars it's anything but a bargain.. but i love the styling in this picture - the casual tee under the blazer and the layered necklaces. such a great look. a mix of dressy and casual.

this blazer is from gap, and is much more reasonably priced at 98 dollars. also a good option to consider. i can't seem to find it in black though - only indigo, and i feel like i would much rather have it in black.

here is one from the brand hinge sold at nordstroms. i have had really great luck with this brand in the past, so i am going to try and check out this blazer. it's 118 dollars - so not terribly cheap but not a wallet breaker either.
either way, i am loving this trend and can't wait to get a boyfriend blazer of my own !

"god bless america"

i finally got around to seeing this statue (named "god bless america") in pioneer court while i was wandering around chicago the other day ! i have been wanting to see this for a while - i just think it is so great that they transformed grant wood's famous and iconic "american gothic" painting into an actual statue !

an easy yet delicious dinner !
on friday night i decided to cook a real dinner. pause for reaction. i don't really know much about cooking - all i have mastered so far are baked chicken and fajitas. so on friday i decided to try out a new recipe, one by ellie krieger. in case you don't know who that is, ellie krieger is a registered dietician who has come up with recipes that are delicious yet healthy. after searching through her book, i finally settled on balsamic chicken with baby spinach. i was really pleasantly surprised with this recipe ! not only was it easy to make, but it was full of flavor. couscous is also a nice substitute for pasta, which i have been trying to stay away from lately..
anyways, here is a link to the recipe ! try it out if you get a chance !
